Most of us approach fasting and cleansing with gritted teeth. We focus on hunger, discomfort, and deprivation. I don’t mean to belittle these symptoms; rather I want to expand the range of possibilities for what this internal "house cleaning" can bring into our lives.

First, let’s differentiate between fasting and cleansing. Fasting means the complete absence of a particular substance or activity. Most of us think of abstaining from food, but a fast could include eliminating water, conversation, sex, and/or media expo-sure (TV, newspaper, radio, etc.)
